About Varna
Varna is the third biggest city in Bulgaria. The population is around 340 000 people. It is a maritime capital and most interesting, cosmopolitan and vibrant city on the Black Sea. There is an airport so you can fly directly from almost any point in England. As a port city and seaside resort with amazing coastline beaches, full with history and modern touch Varna is beautiful place to visit during the summer. As the checkups in the dental clinic won’t last more than an hour or two, you have the opportunity to enjoy the city life – during days and during nights.
Varna was founded as Odessus back in 6th century bc. For a few decades Odessos was within the borders of the Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great, but later it reestablished its independence and again rose as an economical, commercial and cultural centre. The city was coining its own money which is an evidence of its development. In 681ce the city become part of the First Bulgarian Empire and it was named Varna.
During the history of the city and the country a lot of historical landmarks are ruined then build and ruined again. But there are some which you can see to this day:
The Roman Baths – they are the largest bath on the Balkans with area of 7000sqm, which makes them the fourth largest in Europe. They were use until the end of the 3rd century.
Another tourist place is Aladzha Monastery one of the few rock monasteries in the country. This monastery is man-made and purposely carved in face of 25m high karst cliff. Inside you can find a boasting mosaics that survived very well and medieval frescoes which been partly lost.
You can see multiple monuments presented nowadays in the city Archaeological Museum date back to this period. In the museum is the oldest golden treasure in the world found by now which is dating back to six thousand years ago.
You can also visit the Maritime and Ethnographic Museums where you can see articles related our military and shipping history and rich diversity of culture and style of life during 19th and 20th century.
One of the most iconic buildings is Varna Cathedral wich is buld not long ago after the Bulgarian Liberation from the Ottomans by the Russians in late 19th century. A lot of the icons are donated by the Russian Tsar Nikolas II.
A little bit out of the city you can see a strange phenomenon The Stone Forest. The Stone Desert, is a desert-like rock phenomenon located on the north west Varna Province border in Bulgaria. It is considered the only desert in Bulgaria and one of few found in Europe. The Stone Desert is not only a well known European tourist attraction due to its desert like habitat, but it is one of few places where desert type vegetation such as cactus are known to grow. It is also the only desert in Europe in which desert reptilians and other desert type animalia are found to thrive.The Forest is a field of stone columns, some very high at area of about 13 square kilometres. The columns are hollow and have been formed by a process known as methane oxidation caused by tiny organisms, and it’s very difficult to believe they are not man-made.
In the centre of the city you can find the lively cultural and restaurant scene. The restaurants and nightclubs on the coastline have exceptional menus and cocktails offered in designed environments. Bulgarians are famous as a fun-loving nation. There is a huge selection of entertainment venues – from classy piano bars to casual pubs; from noisy rock clubs to vibrant discos. The nightlife in Varna is endless – the clubs stay open all night. At the port of Varna you can enjoy a small fun park and some of the best fine dines restaurants. You can enjoy a walk on an alley along the beach and you can choose in which bar or club you want to continue the night….. untill sunrise.
If you have time definitely spend it on the beach in Varna or surrounding resorts and cities. In a distance of 20-30 km you can enjoy around 5 top resorts covered with fine golden sand beaches which make them very comfortable to lie and get a sun tan: St. Konstantin and Elena, Sunny Day, Golden Sands and Albena. You can enjoy a big selection of water sports and some other activities.
Further away is a small and beautiful city called Balchik where you can go and see one of the biggest and richest Botanical Garden during the day and for a nice dinner and walk in the evening.
For any golf lovers there are few amazing golf courses around.
Varna is city modern city with great history, beautiful beaches and amazing views. The people are very welcoming and helpful. You can enjoy a variety of cuisines and some of the best open air bars and clubs.
