Introduction to Facial Rejuvenation

Facial rejuvenation is a popular cosmetic surgery approach designed to restore a more youthful appearance to the face and neck. As we age, the skin naturally loses elasticity, facial muscles slacken, and natural fat pads sag, leading to the formation of skin folds and a loss of youthful contours. Drastic weight loss can accelerate this aging process, contributing to drooping skin and sagging ch

eeks. Facelift surgery, also known as facelift rhytidectomy, is an effective solution to address these visible signs of aging. By tightening the underlying facial muscles and removing excess skin, facelift procedures can dramatically improve facial contours, helping patients achieve a smoother, refreshed look.

There are several facelift techniques available, each tailored to different needs and desired outcomes. These include the deep plane facelift, which targets the deeper layers of the face such as the superficial musculo aponeurotic system (SMAS) and other underlying tissues for natural and long-lasting results; the SMAS facelift, which manipulates the SMAS layer for effective rejuvenation; the MACS facelift, a minimally invasive, short-scar technique using suspension stitches; the midface lift, which focuses on the midface and nasolabial folds to address sagging cheeks and deep creases; and the mini facelift, suitable for mild to moderate sagging. Traditional facelift surgery is often chosen for more extensive rejuvenation. Frequently, a neck lift or eyelid surgery is performed alongside a facelift to further enhance the overall facial appearance and address loose skin or excess fat in the neck and around the eyes.

Facial plastic surgery clinics provide comprehensive assessments to determine the most suitable surgical technique for each individual. Factors such as bone structure, facial fat distribution, skin quality, the degree of sagging skin, soft tissue condition, and presence of skin folds are carefully evaluated. The facelift procedure typically involves discreet incisions along the hairline and around the ears, allowing the plastic surgeon to access and reposition deeper facial tissues, tighten facial muscles, and remove excess skin. Some patients may opt for a mini facelift, offering a less invasive option with a shorter recovery period, while others benefit from more extensive traditional or deep plane facelift surgery. Alternative treatments, such as thread lifts and skin-only facelifts, are also available for those seeking less invasive options.

Choosing an experienced plastic surgeon is essential for achieving safe, natural-looking results and minimizing risks such as nerve injury, permanent hair loss, or poor wound healing. Patients should discuss their goals, medical history, and any previous surgeries during consultation to ensure the best possible outcome. With the right surgical technique and aftercare, most patients enjoy a more youthful appearance and renewed confidence, making facial rejuvenation a transformative option for addressing the effects of aging on the face and neck.

Modern facelift techniques have evolved from early reconstructive surgery to advanced procedures that address both the skin and deeper structures of the face.

About the Procedure

The aging process causes a loss of elasticity in the facial skin, leading to decreased firmness. Soft tissues and the underlying facial skeleton atrophy over time, resulting in skin laxity, wrinkles, and the gradual disappearance of a youthful look. Sagging cheeks and skin folds, such as nasolabial folds, commonly develop as a consequence.

During facelift surgery, the middle and lower thirds of the face—including the temples, cheekbones, cheeks, mouth, jaw line, and upper neck—are lifted and repositioned, with excess skin removed. Depending on the surgical technique, the procedure may involve manipulation of deeper layers and tissues, including the superficial musculo aponeurotic system (SMAS) and soft tissue, for more significant rejuvenation. Most facelift techniques involve incisions starting in the hairline at the temples, extending around the front of the ear, and ending behind the ear. Some methods may require incisions inside the mouth, such as under the upper lip, to access certain facial structures. Surgeons take great care to avoid damaging blood vessels and the facial nerve to minimize risks. Scars are typically hidden in the hairy part of the scalp and natural folds around the ears. Proper healing at the incision site is important to minimize visible scarring. Facelift surgery can be combined with other cosmetic procedures for enhanced results.

Facelift Techniques

Comparison of incision patterns for different facelift techniques including SMAS, MACS, Deep Plane, Mini, and Traditional Facelift.
  • MACS Facelift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension): A less invasive technique using shorter incisions and permanent suspension stitches to achieve a vertical lift with less scarring. The SMAS layer is tightened without cutting underneath it.

  • Midface Lift: Targets the cheek area and nasolabial folds by repositioning fat pads to restore volume. It involves small incisions along the hairline or inside the mouth.

  • Deep Plane Facelift: Addresses both the skin and underlying SMAS muscle layer for a more noticeable and natural result.

  • Mini Facelift: Suitable for mild to moderate sagging with smaller incisions and a shorter recovery time.

  • Traditional Facelift: More extensive surgery addressing significant sagging skin and loose facial muscles.

Both local anaesthetic and general anaesthetic may be used depending on the extent of the surgery. After excess skin removal, compression bandages and other measures are applied to minimize swelling. Severe pain is uncommon but should be reported to the surgeon if experienced.

Combining facelift surgery with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as skin resurfacing treatments can improve skin quality and enhance overall results. Performing a facelift and neck surgery together can reduce recovery time compared to separate procedures. .

For those seeking less invasive options, mini-invasive treatments such as FaceTite contouring and lifting and other mini-invasive body sculpting treatments offer contouring and lifting benefits without extensive surgery. . .

Facelift Recovery Process

Recovery from facelift surgery typically involves swelling and bruising, which peak during the first week after the procedure. Most patients experience some discomfort, tightness, or numbness in the facial area, which can be effectively managed with prescribed pain medication. Compression garments are usually worn for about six weeks to support healing and minimize swelling. Sleeping with the head elevated, at approximately a 45-degree incline, during the first two weeks helps reduce swelling further.

Swelling and bruising generally begin to subside after the initial week, but some residual swelling may persist for several weeks. Most patients can return to light activities and work within two weeks, although more extensive procedures may require three to four weeks off work. Final results become more apparent over the following months as swelling fully resolves, with optimal outcomes typically visible within six months to one year post-surgery. Scheduled follow-up appointments with the surgeon help monitor recovery progress and address any concerns.

Final results from a facelift become more apparent over the following few months as swelling fully subsides, with optimal outcomes typically visible within 6 months to 1 year post-surgery.The majority of patients will start to see more noticeable improvements in their facial contour by one month after surgery.

Risk of Facelift Surgery

While facelift surgery is generally safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, there are risks involved. Common side effects include bruising, swelling, and temporary numbness around the incision sites. More serious but less common complications include infection, hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin that may require surgical drainage), nerve injury which can be temporary or permanent, and scarring such as hypertrophic scars.

Smoking significantly increases the risk of skin necrosis (death of skin tissue) after surgery. Patients are typically advised to stop blood thinners like aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs at least one week before surgery to reduce bleeding risks. Other factors that can increase postoperative complications include hypertension, diabetes, and poor overall health. Realistic expectations and thorough consultation with the surgeon are essential to minimize dissatisfaction and ensure safe outcomes.

Choosing The Right Specialist Surgeon

Selecting the right plastic surgeon is crucial for a safe and satisfying facelift outcome. Look for surgeons specializing in facial plastic surgery. Experience with specific facelift techniques, including deep plane facelift and SMAS lift, is important.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the procedure performed?

Facelift surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia and can last several hours. The surgeon makes discreet incisions around the ears and hairline, lifts and repositions soft tissues and muscles, removes excess skin and fat, tightens underlying tissues, and closes the incisions carefully to minimize scarring. The most suitable technique depends on your skin condition and desired results.

What preparations are needed before surgery?

You should stop taking blood thinners such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements as advised by your surgeon to reduce bleeding risk. Discuss your expectations thoroughly to ensure they are achievable. Some patients may require multiple sessions or combined procedures for optimal results.

What is the recovery like?

Recovery is generally fast. You may experience swelling and bruising around incision sites, which typically resolve within two weeks. Avoid exercise for 4-6 weeks and refrain from activities that cause facial redness, such as sauna or steam baths. Compression bandages are worn during the first week. Follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions carefully.

How long does the result last?

Facelift results are long-lasting and can be considered practically permanent. Factors influencing longevity include your age at surgery, skin condition, surgeon’s skill, and lifestyle habits such as smoking and sun exposure. Maintaining a stable weight, staying hydrated, and protecting your skin from sun damage will help preserve results.

What are the risks?

All risks will be discussed with you during the consultation with your plastic surgeon.

Scarring for instance is possible, but only to a minimum degree. It will fade over time and with the right treatment. You can help minimize the risks by following the advice and instructions of your surgeon, both before and after your facelift procedure.

Will I have scars?

Facelift scars are usually very well hidden within natural skin folds and hairlines. With proper surgical technique and healing, scars fade over time and are often barely noticeable.

Can a facelift be combined with other treatments?

Yes, facelift surgery is often combined with neck lifts, eyelid surgery, non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, or skin resurfacing treatments to achieve a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Combining procedures can reduce overall recovery time and enhance results. .

How do I know if I am a good candidate for a facelift?

Ideal candidates generally have sagging skin and loose facial muscles but still retain some skin elasticity. Good overall health and realistic expectations are important. A consultation with a qualified surgeon can help determine suitability and, for male patients, whether a facelift for men is the most appropriate option. .

What type of anaesthesia is used during facelift surgery?

Facelift surgery can be performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthetic with sedation, depending on the procedure’s extent and patient preference.

How soon can I return to work after a facelift?

Recovery times vary, Most patients can typically return to work and social activities within the first month after surgery. More extensive procedures may require 3 to 4 weeks off work. Your surgeon will provide personalized advice based on your surgery.

How do we work

Once you have made contact with us, we will organize a free video consultation with the surgeon we believe is best suited for your particular situation.

This consultation will be within 5 days of your request. Prior to the video consultation, we will ask you to fill out a questionnaire about your medical history and send photos of the problematic areas.

If necessary during the video consultation your doctor will advise you to take additional photos of the problematic areas and suggestions for the angle from which to take photos.

This consultation will be combined with a detailed discussion about your wishes and the possibilities for achieving them.  We will discuss with you the expected results, possible risks and any other issues that you might be concerned about.

We advise you to make a list of all the questions you may want to ask concerning the procedure before the actual consultation. After the official request to us, and if you wish, we can arrange a meeting for you with our representative in London.

Within 24 hours of the video consultation, we will send you a costing describing the price of the procedure and the needed length of stay in Bulgaria. In the costing there will also be preferential prices offered for our partner hotels with which we work and for which we can guarantee the quality and comfort.

You will then have 3-4 days of time to reflect, and give us your decision.

If you decide to proceed and agree with all terms and conditions , you will have 48 hours within which you must prepay 30% of the total amount of the procedure. This amount is paid directly to the clinic where your procedure will be performed and thereby you will have a reserved date and time for your procedure and a room in the hotel you have chosen. The remaining balance has to be paid by the day before the procedure itself after conducting the preliminary examination in the clinic.

If you decide or need to cancel the procedure, this must be done at least 30 days before the date of your flight in order to be able to trigger a process for returning your deposit.

If you decide to cancel our services within the last 30 days before your flight, you must have a good reason for doing so (supported by evidence) in order to take your money back. If you cancel it within these 30 days and the reason is acceptable, your money will be returned, but you will be suspended 50 euro for an administrative fee. If you wish to change the date of the procedure, this can happen at least 30 days before.

If you wish, we can also arrange your travel from your home to the airport. We are partners with a transport company and you can use our preferential prices. This also applies to your return flight. To do this, you will need to send us the details of your flight one week in advance.

Upon arrival in Bulgaria, you will be greeted at the airport by one of our employees who will take you to your hotel.

On the day before the operation, you will have a preliminary examination, where some necessary tests will be performed (e.g. blood tests) and we will specify all the details related to the operation (treatment plan, proposal for some additional or adjacent procedures for a better outcome, recovery plan etc). Our employee will take you to the clinic and after that to the place where you are to be accommodated.

Before the surgery, you will need to sign an informed consent document (i.e. a document certifying that you have been informed by the doctor about all potential risks and complications and that you understand them) and agree to proceed with the procedure).

On the day of the operation our employee will bring you back to the clinic. Depending on the procedure, you may need to have one or several days of hospital stay. After the completion of the procedure and the hospital stay, our employee will take you back to your hotel.

During the entire stay, our employee will be at your service throughout.

If you wish, and if the procedure allows, we can arrange your stay according to your requirements but this must be specified in advance.

On the day of departure, you will be accompanied by our employee back to the airport.

If you wish, we can arrange your stay according to your requirements. This must be specified in advance.

You will be provided with a detailed plan on the recovery process.

On the seventh and fourteenth days, preventive online consultations will be made to track how the recovery goes.

Online consultation reviews are also done on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6thmonths.You will be able to contact us at any time!
