Basic Information about Sofia

Sofia is the largest city and capital of Bulgaria. The population is around 1,250,000 people. Sofia is located in the west side of the country, on the lower part of Vitosha Mountain and Sofia Plain. People in the city can enjoy all four seasons as the climate in the country is moderate and continental. You can expect cold winter and hot summer days. This city is founded many years ago and is one of the oldest in Europe. Today the city continues to develop as a cultural and economic centre. Sofia is very compact, which makes it very easy to walk around with different type of enjoyments for different tastes. It offers a very relaxed atmosphere and good quality of life.

 Diverse Cuisine in Sofia

The city centre is full of different styles of restaurants, bars, cafeterias, and fast foods. There is all type of cuisines, as the most of them are typical Bulgarian but also there are Mediterranean, Asian, British and Italian. You can choose between some gourmet and fine dine restaurants as well as some of the most famous worldwide and Bulgarian fast food chains.

 Nightlife in Sofia

People in Sofia love to party and because there are no existent licensing laws, this town is full of bars, clubs, and venues which are open all times of the days and night. There is something to everyone from nice cocktail bars to pubs, piano bars, jazz clubs, disco clubs, live stage venues, and casinos.

 Cultural Landmarks and Museums in Sofia

Bulgaria is an old country and as such there are some cultural places, museums, and galleries to visit as well.

There are a number of museums to visit: National History Museum, The Antique Serdica and Largo (this is an archaeological site), The Earth and Man National Museum, National Museum of Social Art, National Archaeological Museum, Ethnographic Institute and Museum, National Museum of Military History, and Sofia History Museum.

 Architecture and Historical Landmarks

The architecture and buildings that you can see to this day in the centre of the city date back to 1878. The style is strongly influenced by the Austrian builders, because of their technology, art, and knowledge of construction.

Some of the most significant buildings are: The National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria, The Palace, Aleksandrovska Hospital, Bulgarian National Bank, The building of the President, Central Military Club, Ministry of Defence, National Theatre, National Post Office and many more.

 Churches in Sofia

There are some old churches around: St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Boyana Church, St. Nedelya Church, St. Sofia Church, St. George Rotunda Church and The Russian Church.

 Parks and Nature in Sofia

The Capital is quite good for walks. We have very good big Green Parks in the city in which you have the feeling that you are in the countryside. In 10-20 min distance you can enjoy real mountain views as Sofia is surrounded by a mountain Vitosha.
